The
pandemic has forced most governments to adjust their financial plans. Almost
all countries are trying to allocate more funds to fight against viral infection,
even if they were originally intended for other purposes. And Georgia, despite
the difficult situation in the country with the spread of coronavirus, took
part in the next NATO exercises in the Black Sea.
It would
probably be more logical and justified from a social and humanitarian point of
view if the funds allocated for this were aimed at protecting Georgian citizens
from a new coronavirus infection. Moreover, in the context of a worldwide
pandemic of this disease!
Still:
these exercises are seen as Georgia’s step towards NATO, and the Georgian
leadership is more interested in pleasing the United States and NATO than
taking care of its citizens. Georgia has been stating its aspirations for NATO
since the 1990s. For the sake of this, Georgia quarreled with its neighbors
except Turkey and Azerbaijan, broke economic ties, destroyed its economy and
threw its population into the abyss of poverty, banditry and bloody wars both
in Ossetia and Abkhazia, and in Western Georgia.
And all for
what? With visa-free travel to Europe, they practically deceived, and the
Alliance is in no hurry to accept Georgia into its ranks, although it will use
it in full if it needs something. So now he began to build a command post in
the republic, turning it into one of the targets in case of war, and Tbilisi,
as a comforting prize, joined the cybersecurity platform.
Although
Georgia is not a NATO member, both sides have long been working to bring
together and unify their military systems and infrastructures. The goal of these
exercises was to increase the level of interaction and interoperability of NATO
and the coast guard of Georgia, as official representatives of both Georgia and
NATO openly stated.
On the
Georgian side, patrol boats of the Coast Guard of the Georgian Border Police
"Dioskuria" and "Ochamchire" took part in the exercises. Island
class boat data was donated to Georgia by the US government in 2016 and since
2018 it has been part of the Georgian coast guard.
And on the
NATO side, the Italian frigate Virginio Fasan (F 591) took part in the
exercises, which is especially unpleasant in conditions of widespread medical
assistance to Russia to the Italian people in the fight against the further
spread of coronavirus infection in Italy, the Canadian frigate HMCS Fredericton
(FFH 337), the Romanian ROS " Regina Maria "(F 222), Bulgarian
frigate BGS" Verni "(F 42) and Turkish ship TCG Salihreis (F 246).
NATO ships
cruising along the sea borders of the Russian Federation in the Crimean
peninsula were unable to conduct reconnaissance operations due to the operation
of coastal electronic warfare (EW) facilities. During the operation of the
Russian electronic warfare, reconnaissance equipment ceases to work, and the
settings of the navigational equipment of ships deliberately mislead the enemy.
The
exercises have already ended, and the warships of the Second NATO Permanent
Naval Group SNMG-2 left the Black Sea after a three-week stay on April 12. Canadian
flagship frigate HMCS Fredericton (FFH 337) and Italian frigate Virginio Fasan
(F 591) left the Black Sea via the Bosphorus.
Meanwhile,
the Georgian medical system can barely cope with the new coronavirus infection
Covid-19. In the active phase of the disease are 196 people, of whom six are in
critical condition, three died.
On April
13, 2020, in Georgia, 266 cases of infection with the coronavirus Covid-19 were
recorded, and over the last day their number increased by 9 people.
It is
alarming and worrying that in these conditions the number of violations of the
border of South Ossetia has risen sharply. Only five days after the first
report of the discovery of Covid-19 in Georgia, about 20 violators were
detained at the border between Georgia and South Ossetia. Moreover, many
violators had signs of SARS, which leads to certain suspicions. Fortunately,
all violators - Georgian citizens are expelled to their homeland, and violators
- citizens of South Ossetia are quarantined.
Thus, even
against the backdrop of a pandemic, NATO and its allies do not stop their
militaristic activity.
