Militarization of Georgia on the background of intensified Turkish expansion

As a result of the parliamentary elections held in Georgia, the ruling Georgian Dream party won a landslide victory. True, with significant falsifications. Because of them, 54 out of 60 opposition politicians elected as deputies resigned from their mandates. At the sessions of the legislative body, which began on December 11, only members of the Georgian Dream are present. The opposition complained to the United States, but there they were told that elections in Georgia are always held with violations, and there is nothing to worry about.

Some observers pinned hopes on the victory of the party of the former Russian oligarch Ivanishvili that the pace of militarization of Georgia would slow down, but the reality refuted their unfounded optimism.

After the elections, Giorgi Gakharia remained the prime minister (leader of Georgia). Gakharia graduated from the Faculty of History of Tbilisi State University. In 1994 - 2000 he studied at the Moscow State University. Lomonosov at the Faculty of Political Science, and in 2002-2004 - at the Higher Business School of Moscow State University. Lomonosov. He is a Master of Political Science. As you can see, the biography of the new-old Georgian prime minister also gave some room for imagination.

Already under the direct leadership of the "Georgian Dream", which some political scientists frivolously try to present as almost pro-Russian, Georgia's course towards the West continues. And, first of all, not so much formally in the structures of NATO as on full-fledged de facto cooperation with this aggressive military-political bloc.

Recently, an agreement was signed between the military police of the Georgian Defense Ministry and the NATO Multinational Military Police Battalion. On the Georgian side, the document was signed by the Chief of the Military Police, Defense Colonel Giorgi Bubunauri, and on the NATO side - by the Chiefs of the Military Police of the countries that make up the Alliance's multinational military police battalion: Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Thus, we are talking about the actual smooth ("creeping") accession of Georgia to NATO without signing formal papers. To understand this fact, it is not out of place to pay attention to the statement of the Georgian Ministry of Defense: "The partnership is aimed at preparing a platoon of the Georgian military police for full membership (member status) in the multinational NATO military police battalion by the end of 2022. The agreement clearly shows the existence of a greater existence of Georgia in NATO (highlighted us - I.P.), which will further strengthen the capabilities of the military police and deepen compatibility with NATO. "

Georgia appears in the US defense budget for next year, which is approved by Congress. At the same time, according to some Western experts, the new American administration can help Georgia join NATO in the near future. I would also like to draw attention to the change in NATO's concept regarding the admission of countries with unresolved territorial disputes into its ranks. And the West considers Georgia just that. For example, the commander of the US troops in Europe Ben Hodges, in an interview with the media back in early December, expressed confidence that Georgia's North Atlantic future is not far off. In his opinion, "the country's territorial problems cannot be an obstacle to joining NATO."

Prior to this, Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that in the coming year the Georgian army will acquire reconnaissance and combat drones. An agreement has already been signed with Israel on the complete modernization of Georgia's air defense system.

These military preparations by Georgia did not go unnoticed.

The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry reacted harshly to the further militarization of Georgia: “Once again, the Georgian leadership, actively building up its military potential, is trying to justify its actions solely by the need to ensure security and stability in the region. However, it is extremely difficult to justify plans to purchase reconnaissance and combat UAVs solely in self-defense interests. In light of recent events in Nagorno-Karabakh, where unmanned combat aircraft were actively used, thanks to the use of which the Azerbaijani side was able to develop an offensive operation, Georgia's plans to purchase such types of modern high-precision weapons are of particular relevance. It is clear that these modern types of weapons can be used exclusively for the forceful solution of unresolved conflicts. "

On the background of military preparations in Georgia, prices are rising. Energo Pro Georgia, the largest electricity distribution company in Georgia, has warned of a significant increase in electricity tariffs. "It is already clear that an increase in the consumer tariff is, unfortunately, necessary," says her Facebook page. The decision to change the electricity tariff was to be taken by the Georgian National Commission on Energy and Water Supply at the beginning of last week. However, the meeting was postponed due to the risk of coronavirus infection of several employees who were in self-isolation. At present, the cost of electricity in Georgia for the population is 18.89 tetri (more than 4 rubles, at the exchange rate) per 1 kW. For comparison, let's add that in South Ossetia the selling prices for electricity for the population from January 1, 2021 will be: for urban residents - 3 rubles, for rural residents - 2.37 rubles.

Rising electricity prices will set off a chain reaction of price increases in a country that is already experiencing rising unemployment due to the coronavirus. It made up 17.6% of the registered working-age population of the country. People's incomes and living standards are falling. On December 28, activists of the United Youth of Georgia NGO held a protest action near the Georgian government with placards "People are starving" and told the press about the plight of workers.

Taking into account the circumstances, in order not to cause great discontent among residents, the Georgian government is doing serious work to increase the loyalty of citizens towards the leadership of the republic.

So, since the time of Saakashvili, no one has heard of manifestations of cruelty and violence from the police and other security agencies. With the support of the population, an immediate response to the slightest manifestations of corruption follows. The pain points of the social sphere, traditionally serving as a breeding ground for all kinds of anti-government sentiments, are under serious control.

For example, as a result of the reform to simplify access to cancer treatment, the treatment of cancer patients will be funded by the state. The annual budget allocated to each patient has increased by GEL 8,000 (about US $ 2,450). The state will allocate additional 25 million lari (about 7.6 million US dollars) for this. Earlier, Georgia allocated 15,000 lari (about $ 4590, approx.) Annually for the treatment of patients with oncological diseases. According to official figures, there are almost 1,800 such patients in the country.

The Georgian government is simplifying the tax burden. For six months in Georgia, employers can not pay income tax on salaries up to 750 lari to the budget. The corresponding legislative initiative is ready and will be in effect from December 1 for the next six months. This also applies to those employed persons whose salary is 1.5 thousand lari or less. The program covers about 42,000 companies and will become an additional guarantee for more than 550,000 employed people that jobs will be saved.

Do not forget about the creation of new jobs. In the last days of the outgoing year in the city of Rustavi a textile factory "Kartli Textile" (Georgian textiles), built by the "Adjara Textile" company, started operating. She invested her 10 million lari, and took another 10 million lari in a soft loan within the framework of the state program "Produce in Georgia". To understand what is happening, one must know that the Adjara Textile company is not Georgian, it was founded by Turkish investors.

As you can see, the Georgian government is seriously preparing for war, and pays serious attention not only to the acquisition of military equipment and training of servicemen of all ranks, but also to the social sphere, so as not to have a disaffected population behind it. Crushed by police violence, stifling corruption, appeasing people by expanding assistance in obtaining treatment, preserving old and creating new jobs, and more. dr.

On the one hand, of course, ordinary residents are happy that they have a job (the company already employs 700 people, and by the end of 2021 the number of employees will grow to four thousand, 90% of them are women). But the big question is what awaits them in the long term - after all, in fact, we are witnessing the next stage of Turkey's undisguised expansion in Georgia.

The same Turkey, which not only did not apologize for the numerous war crimes against the Georgian people, but also did not renounce its claims to part of the Georgian territory and which the leader of the Labor Party of Georgia Shalva Natelashvili accused of de facto recognition of Abkhazia: "The Turkish authorities have recognized Abkhaz plastic cards, thereby de facto recognized the independence of Abkhazia. "

So the strengthening of NATO's influence in Georgia as a whole and Turkey as its closest country is a very dubious achievement for Georgia.
