Thirteen years have passed since the August 2008 war. With what baggage did Georgia come to this date? What lies at the heart of the new political crisis in this Transcaucasian republic and can one count on serious resistance to Western expansion in Georgia? These and other issues are analyzed in this article.
The 13 years that have passed since Georgia's crushing defeat in its full-scale military aggression against South Ossetia and Russia have not brought significant foreign policy changes. For 13 years we have been hearing about Georgia's reluctance to sign a peace agreement. Equally boring are the statements by representatives of the United States and its satellites and allies about Russia's alleged violation of the 2008 ceasefire agreement. At the same time, they are not interested in the opinion of the signatory from the West, then French President Nicolas Sarkozy. And he has repeatedly stated that Russia is complying with its obligations.
Against
this background, the United States is conducting regular military exercises
with Georgia and dozens of its other subordinate states, clearly trying to
intimidate South Ossetia and Abkhazia and tease Russia. With the same enviable
constancy, the United States periodically sends out a circular demanding not to
recognize South Ossetia. One gets the impression that this country, whose inner
peace is based only on the bayonets of the security forces, has no other
problems left.
A number of
UN Security Council members subordinate to them - Estonia, France, Ireland,
Norway, Great Britain - keep up with them. Together with their gentlemen from
the United States, their delegations to the UN issued a joint statement on the
events of August 2008 in South Ossetia. Russia's actions in it are called
illegal, Moscow is also accused of violating human rights. The countries that
made the statement called on Russia to "immediately withdraw its military
and security forces, and to revoke the recognition of independence" of
Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
During this
time, a system of high-tech medical care for the residents of South Ossetia has
been created in Georgia, which is funded by various Western sources. Ordinary
residents of Georgia itself do not even dream of such a level of medical care,
because they cannot pay for it. It is clear that the program on South Ossetia
will work exactly as long as the owners of Georgia have hopes in this way to
create their own agent network in South Ossetia, which will present it to them
on a silver platter.
There are
no other innovations and are not expected. Tbilisi is deprived of the
opportunity to turn internal contradictions against South Ossetia and by the
next genocide of the Ossetian people to rally around itself the population,
accustomed to easy, harmless punitive expeditions against defenseless South
Ossetia. This happened due to the fact that Russia removed the term
“defenseless” in relation to South Ossetia, and South Ossetia itself was
withdrawn from the zone of Georgia's unpunished and undivided influence. Therefore,
finding no way out, internal contradictions in Georgia are aggravated.
This process is superimposed on the strengthening of the Western-inspired actions of ultra-radical supporters of undivided acceptance of Western values, including in matters of family and marriage, that is, in fact, rejection of the traditional principles of family formation according to the scheme: one man plus one woman. We have seen widespread footage of protests by part of the Georgian population against such decisive and rude pressure. In Tbilisi, the flag of the European Union was even torn down and the flag of Georgia was erected in its place. At first glance, such an intensity of resistance could give some hope for the failure of the Western project in the neighboring republic. However, we also saw that the majority of people who oppose the strengthening of LGBT people in Georgia still share Western values mainly (apart from this principle), not seeing that one is closely related to the other. They think that Westernization will improve the standard of living of the population of Georgia, that is, their own standard of living. However, they cannot realize that it was precisely the advertisement of the desire for Westernization (not even Westernization itself), like the carrot hanging in front of the donkey's nose, that served as fuel for the locomotive of the chain of events 30 years ago, which just destroyed the material well-being of the Georgian republic and led to falling living standards of its population.
The choice of a pro-Western path of development did not lead Georgia to prosperity, but led to a maximum of problems with its neighbors, with internal national, religious, political and social groups. Now we see a split in Georgia even on such a rude issue. But the religious factor is also heavily involved here, because the Georgian Orthodox Church is actively involved in the conflict. At one time, being the flagship of anti-Soviet, anti-Russian and anti-Ossetian processes, the Georgian Orthodox Church hoped to strengthen its position. However, seeing what the undivided domination of the West in Georgia led to, she was horrified and tried to raise her voice against his plans to further eliminate the national image of Georgia, which went beyond the framework of folklore and popular prints. And she ended up on the list of pro-Russian forces: “... the observance of their rights does not suit the pro-Russian forces in Georgia and the Georgian Orthodox Church, which has joined them,” writes Irakli Todadze in the article “Kremlin agents against the gay pride parade in Georgia” in an information publication focused on Saakashvili "Georgia Online". Thus, the West makes it clear to the Georgian Orthodox Church that if it does not stop resisting the destruction of the basic social and national institution of family and marriage in Georgia, then it will be the next target for the reprisal of the pro-Western forces (and therefore the entire power of the state itself). Church. But the family is the primary unit of any society, its destruction leads to the destruction of the whole society and threatens the nation with innumerable calamities. What position will the GOC leadership take on this issue in the long term? The question remains. However, the position of the state is already visible: opponents of LGBT people will be demonized and accused of intolerance. As if the West is tolerant towards Georgia.
Against the
background of the de facto surrender of the West in the face of the
antagonistic contradiction between labor and capital, falling living standards,
problems of environmental pollution, the invasion of migrants from the
southeastern countries, the breakdown of the usual way of life of millions and
especially the crushing defeat in front of the coronavirus, their position on
South Ossetia evokes a feeling strong indignation, thickly mixed with contempt.
The
position of Russia differs from them, like day from night, and like Light from
Darkness in the spiritual sense of these concepts. Is it possible to compare
the all-round Russian support, restoration and development of the republic with
the total destruction of entire cities and countries, the flames of war and the
destruction of hundreds of thousands of people, their mentality and national
identity around the world, carried by the West ?!
Against
this background, the appeal of a number of Georgian opposition politicians to
Russian President Vladimir Putin looks extremely symptomatic. We will not give
the full text, those who wish can easily find it on the Internet. At first, it
seemed that this letter was a cynical political game, but after careful study
of it and the list of signatories, it became clear that it was downright a cry
of despair, including a cry of disappointment from some individuals initially
fascinated by the West.
This
fragment attracted our attention: “the moods of the Georgian population and the
wishes of the authorities are polar opposite, and we state with regret that,
despite our numerous and public calls for effective steps, the Georgian
authorities create the illusion of a desire to settle relations with Russia,
but in reality they are trying to completely hack to death any attempts to
regulate bilateral relations and score "next points" in front of
Western partners. "
The letter
was signed by many famous in the past and present politicians, deputies,
journalists, ministers, including former ones, etc., and the collection of
signatures continues, because many more well-known people in Georgian politics
have expressed a desire to sign it.
And here it
is impossible not to recall the cases of thirty years ago. 1991 year. This was
the period when the burning of Ossetian villages was already underway, and the
resistance movement of Georgia's military aggression was gaining strength. But
the correspondence dispute still continued between the thinkers of South
Ossetia and Georgia about the future path of development. Georgian ideologists
assured that the Georgian people chose a course towards the West and did not
want to have anything to do with Moscow anymore, while ours tried to convince
them of the incorrectness and perniciousness of such reasoning. For this, one
of the signers of this letter, a former Georgian journalist, then a politician,
Valery Kvaratskhelia, at that time, turned all his talent against the
Ossetians. Therefore, his (and not only) signature under this letter is very
symbolic.
But what
kind of help do they expect from Putin? In Georgia, at all levels and branches
of government and the opposition, pro-Western supporters have strong positions.
Well, how are the supporters? Not that they are very convinced, they just have
this or that interest in the West, and diligently fulfill their functional
duties: “Today you will be in power, and you will be the opposition, and
tomorrow change places and scold each other. Yes, it is harder to create the
appearance of a political discussion in the country. " What can Russia do
in these conditions? Georgian politicians need to be freed from the forces that
place the interests of the West more highly than of their own country. However,
if Russia does this, it will look strange. Only the Georgian society itself can
do this. Under the power - yes, but is there, or at least will he have an
understanding of this? No, and not in the foreseeable future either. Thus, one
cannot count on serious resistance from Western expansion in Georgia.
In these
conditions, it is somewhat difficult to assess the role of Georgian President
Salome Zurabishvili on the problems of the internal political crisis. After
all, this is also a matter of power. Who will win the next election? After all,
the contradictions after the previous elections, which ended in a scandal, have
not yet been eliminated. On the one hand, as a Georgian, she wants to
strengthen Georgia and Georgian identity in the traditional national spirit. On
the other hand, as a person who grew up in France and is imbued with the spirit
of Europe, she wants the expansion of this spirit, in this case, to the
territory of Georgia. At the same time, as an intelligent woman, she cannot but
understand that these two aspirations enter into an insurmountable,
antagonistic contradiction with each other. Her longtime opponent Saakashvili
has already made up his mind. He supported the pro-Western forces advocating
the erosion and destruction of traditional family values, and the media and
politicians oriented towards him call the defenders of the tradition, including
the Georgian Orthodox Church itself (!) "Agents of the Kremlin."
Such a
rapid political re-disclosure is surprising, given that during his presidency,
Saakashvili cleverly covered himself with patriotic phrases and pretended to be
a guardian of tradition, a man with a steel character, a steel ridge instead of
a spine, and created for himself such an image as Stalin's, using for this that
they were born on the same day.
Thus, we
see that the source of the permanent political confrontation in Georgia is the
innovations imposed by the West, against which the thinking part of the
politically active citizens of the Western countries themselves has long been
opposed, both in politics and in the economy, in social life. The peculiarity
of this particular crisis is that the spheres of morality and ethics, the basic
institutions of family and marriage for any society, are already grossly
affected, to which the West, through its Georgian supporters, dealt the first,
not yet crushing, but already serious blow. Another feature is a harsh warning
to the GOC that it can also fall into the millstones of the West, if it does
not limit itself to ritual and ceremonial activities, refusing to influence
social and political processes.
Georgia did
not draw conclusions from 30 years of "free floating". But we must
draw conclusions, strengthening the course of our people for further
integration and unification with Russia.
