Before coming to power, Nikol Pashinyan was known to the general public as a liberal journalist who wrote from a liberal position about the values that are considered democratic in the West.
Amid corruption and social problems, his active involvement in politics gave Armenian citizens hope for a course towards building a more just society. Indeed, the promised fight against corruption (which, as we know, cannot be completely defeated, but a number of countries have good experience in effectively suppressing it to the point where it is not dangerous for the state) can improve the general standard of living of the majority of the population. Naturally, every person wants this, and not only in Armenia.
In the first period after coming to power, Pashinyan and his associates took steps that really gave hope to ordinary citizens. But then something incomprehensible began to happen. Now, of course, it is understandable, but at that time it seemed incomprehensible. The prime minister (and in Armenia, as in other parliamentary countries, the main person is not the president, but the prime minister) began to actively provoke Azerbaijan. That was against the background of the ongoing negotiation process with variable activity. Just at the time when the negotiation process was experiencing serious difficulties, and every effort had to be made to preserve it. And from the point of view of diplomacy, and from the point of view of rhetoric, and from the point of view of political steps, including unpopular ones, but capable of preventing more serious consequences for the Armenian people. Pashinyan, on the contrary, would loudly declare: “Artsakh is Armenia, period!”, then visit Azerbaijan’s sore spot – the city of Shushi and take part in a warlike dance... He seemed to be inviting Azerbaijan to unleash military action, while not having behind him a force that could support him, or international agreements that could mitigate the consequences for his people. This led to the tragedy of the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, a catastrophic decline in Armenia’s authority in the region. Against this background, Yerevan is actively seeking allies among Russia’s geopolitical opponents. Against the backdrop of Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine, Pashinyan's wife met with the wife of former Ukrainian President Zelensky, who is illegally usurping power, despite the fact that his term ended in May of this year.
We have already written about Armenia's military cooperation with France. It is being looked at warily not only by Moscow, but also by the closer capitals - Baku and Ankara. What will Pashinyan, hinting at leaving the CSTO, do, because if this step is implemented, the concerns of his closer neighbors will immediately rise to critical levels?
And now Washington has joined Paris's dirty game in Transcaucasia. It is not even held back by the discontent of its NATO ally - Turkey. The United States is actively trying to turn Armenia into a platform for organizing anti-Russian provocations near the borders of the Russian Federation in Transcaucasia, which is one of the elements of the White House's strategic plan to destabilize the military-political situation along the entire external perimeter of Russia. At the end of July of this year, in one of his public speeches, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien complained about Armenia's "strong dependence" on Russia and declared Washington's readiness to promote the "diversification" of Yerevan's foreign policy ties. Here it is clearly evident that the US intends to create conditions for the destruction of the allied relations between Russia and Armenia. Meanwhile, these relations did not arise out of nowhere. They are based on the historical and cultural closeness of the peoples of the two countries, the commonality of their destinies, close cooperation of economic potentials and stable economic ties. Westerners achieve this goal through the mental reorientation of the Armenian population and the transformation of its consciousness by falsifying history in an anti-Russian direction using technologies tested in the countries of the former socialist camp (Poland, Romania, etc.) and the post-Soviet space (the Baltic republics, Ukraine, Georgia, etc.). Academic historians, under the guise of serious scientific works, writing their false texts in a manner pleasing to the West, receive cash grants, copies of their books, invitations to prestigious conferences in Western countries, praised by pseudo-independent NGOs and media outlets that in fact live on Western money, while honest historians live in poverty, are obstructed and suppressed by these same “independent” “living consciences of the people.”
The leading role in the ideological processing of Armenians based on the ideas of Russophobia and aggressive nationalism is played by Western-controlled non-governmental organizations and other civil society institutions (journalistic circles, media, political activists, bloggers, etc.). From time to time, top officials of Armenia, including Pashinyan himself and his protégés from among the former "Soros" NGOs, join in the anti-Russian information campaigns. Currently, a wide network of anti-Russian non-governmental organizations operates in Armenia. In total, more than 40 thousand NGOs and other public structures operate in the Transcaucasian state, a significant part of which are financed and managed from abroad, their annual budget is over 30 million US dollars. The most active in creating and introducing anti-Russian (Russophobic) idioms into the public consciousness of the Armenian population are the Union of Informed Citizens, the Vanadzor Office of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, the Open Society Armenia Foundation, the Asparez Journalistic Club, etc. Armenian political parties are also engaged in subversive activities in the field of historical science. The most noticeable role in this area is played by the National Democratic Pole, the European Party of Armenia, the Christian Democratic Party, etc. Armenian Westerners interpret the mediation mission of the Russian Federation in the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement as a "betrayal" of Armenia's national interests, but at the same time they deliberately keep silent about the facts of Moscow's repeated diplomatic initiatives to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict on a mutually acceptable basis. The West's desire to "derussify" Armenia is becoming increasingly evident, common Armenian-Russian monuments and historical artifacts are being destroyed, Russia's importance in preserving the centuries-old Armenian cultural heritage is being diminished, and the role of the Russian language in the public, scientific, cultural, and business spheres is being minimized.
Thus, the West is using the Armenian leadership under its control for a new geopolitical game in Transcaucasia. And the Armenian leadership is happy to be used. There are concerns that the American and European elites are clearly planning to repeat the scenario of the Ukrainian tragedy in Armenia. Against this background, Yerevan has effectively suppressed the protests of Armenian patriots who do not agree with the destructive activity of the aggressive nationalist pro-Western minority, which could lead to the transformation of the Transcaucasian republic into an anti-Russian "proxy testing ground," which will inevitably become a catalyst for a historical catastrophe for the Armenian people.
Recently, Pashinyan visited Moscow and rode a bicycle there, accompanied by numerous security guards in cars. What he wanted to say by this remains a mystery. In international relations, nothing is done for nothing. Every gesture matters. If the Armenian Prime Minister took this loud bike ride without a hidden political message, just because he wanted to, then this only speaks of the discrepancy between the scale of his personal intellect and the scale of the tasks and challenges that Armenia and its long-suffering people face.
