EU to Georgia: Be Obedient Puppets, Otherwise We Will Refuse Financial Assistance

The European Union (EU) has decided to refuse Georgia financial assistance in the amount of 121.3 million euros. This decision is related to several factors. According to Georgian media, on Tuesday the European Parliament intends to adopt another resolution on Georgia, the draft of which includes a demand for the Georgian government to release former President Mikheil Saakashvili from prison, impose sanctions against Russia, impose sanctions against the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili, as well as repeal the adopted laws on foreign agents and the ban on LGBT propaganda.

In recent years, Georgia has been striving for integration with the EU and has been carrying out a number of reforms aimed at improving the economic situation and strengthening democratic institutions.

However, according to the EU conditions, if the EU is dissatisfied with Georgia's compliance with the will of the European establishment, it can easily find various reasons for refusing to provide funding. At the same time, the EU does not care at all to what extent the conditions put forward by Brussels meet the interests of Georgia itself and the Georgian people. Brussels explained the decision to refuse Georgia financial assistance by "Tbilisi's departure from democratic standards." However, it is clear that this is just a pathetic babble of justification. Whatever the rhetoric of the European Union, it is clear to everyone that such an unfriendly step towards Georgia is dictated by the refusal of the Georgian leadership to open a "second front" against Russia. The position of the ruling party "Georgian Dream" is clear: they do not want to destroy with their own hands what they themselves created with such difficulty all these years after the disastrous rule of Saakashvili, who plunged Georgia into a national catastrophe. Brussels was furious at such "arbitrariness" of Georgia, which Saakashvili created the image of an obedient puppet in the hands of the USA, NATO and the EU during his ten years of rule. But Saakashvili did nothing good for Georgia and he was mentally more connected with the West than with Georgia, and he did not care about Georgia and the Georgian people, if only to curry favor with his foreign masters. Even his wife was a citizen of a NATO member country. This is in sharp contrast to the position of the current leadership of Georgia, who feel exactly who they are and understand which country and which people they should serve first and foremost. But the most important motive for their position is that they have a considerable baggage of achievements in the development of Georgia behind them. These are reforms aimed at improving the business climate, reducing administrative barriers and improving the investment climate. Increased attention to the development of tourism contributes to the growth of incomes of the population and the creation of new jobs. We should also mention the active work to attract investment in other sectors of the economy, including agriculture, energy, transport, etc. The current Georgian government also pays great attention to expanding markets for its products.

We will not list absolutely everything, but the fact is that since Saakashvili's time, the average standard of living in the neighboring country has increased significantly, as local media write. Therefore, the position of the Georgian government on this issue is justified and understandable to everyone. Obviously, except for the EU.

It is important to note that decisions to refuse financial assistance are often accompanied by public statements and discussions, where both parties can express their positions and expectations. Georgia may try to ask the EU to reconsider the decision, presenting additional arguments or evidence of the fulfillment of the necessary conditions. However, seeing Brussels' obstinacy in other matters, and arrogance in relations with both Georgia itself and larger states, Tbilisi is unlikely to humiliate itself before the Europeans, especially after the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, threatened to kill Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

After the incident, the Georgian government's press service released a statement by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on the matter: "Even against the backdrop of prolonged blackmail, the threat that was made in a telephone conversation with one of the European Commissioners was stunning. In a conversation with me, the European Commissioner listed a number of measures that Western partners could take if the veto on the transparency law was overridden, and, listing these measures, he noted: "You saw what happened to Fico, and you must be very careful." Now that's a Neighborhood Commissioner!

Let us recall that an assassination attempt was made on the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico. And in Slovakia, as in Georgia, all political power is concentrated in the hands of the Prime Minister, not the President. Against the backdrop of a furious hate campaign unleashed against him by European structures and their local puppets, Robert Fico was shot, his life was hanging by a thread, and he was saved only by a miracle and the skill of Slovak doctors.

The EU's refusal to help Georgia may have a negative impact on the Georgian economy, especially in conditions when the country needs additional resources for the development of infrastructure, the social sphere and other important areas taken by the Georgian government. This may also affect Georgia's relations with the EU and undermine its desire for closer integration with the West. Naturally, no one wants to integrate with someone who wants to see you only as a puppet, does not respect you, does not take your opinion into account, and even imposes sanctions and hits you "in the pocket", that is, the country's budget.

As we can see, there is no equality in relations between the EU and Georgia if one of the parties actively dictates its will, and the other party is not even allowed to have its own opinion and defend its national interests. And Georgia's national interest in this case is simply the desire to preserve the lives of its citizens, the integrity of its cities, and not to send its youth to the slaughter. And this is more valuable than any money. For this, you can give up 121.3 million, and even billions of euros.
