Georgia is
not boring. On February 6, a report was published on the website of the
European Commission on the fulfillment in 2019 of the conditions for the
association of Georgia with the European Union. This is an interesting
document. However, we would like to draw attention to the sphere in which the
Georgian rulers who succeeded each other since the mid-80s of the last century
laid special hopes in their anti-Soviet and then anti-Russian hysteria. This is
a visa-free regime with Europe.
According
to the report, with the start of the agreement on visa-free entry of Georgian
citizens to EU countries, almost 900 thousand people took advantage of it. According
to the report, the number of Georgian citizens who applied for asylum in the EU
in 2019 is estimated to be very high and makes up 3% of the total, and the
number of applicants has risen sharply compared to the previous two years.
This
eloquently testifies in the language of a dry, impartial document to what the
South Ossetian politicians and publicists are repeating: the catastrophic
failure of economic policy, national policy, social policy, in a word - all of
Georgia’s domestic policy. Is the EU "dancing to the tune of South
Ossetia"? Not at all. On the contrary, the EU, in its clumsy attempt to
justify Georgia, claims that among the applications of Georgian citizens for
asylum in the EU a significant percentage is occupied by unreasonable ones. In
this regard, the EU further notes that it expects fruitful cooperation with the
Georgian authorities in addressing the challenges of reducing the number of
asylum seekers in the EU.
The
Georgian authorities took a number of measures in order to prevent illegal
migration to other countries. Toughened legislation against violators of the
requirements of a visa-free regime with EU countries. From now on, all expenses
associated with readmission of Georgian citizens will be borne by them. The
procedure for changing the name was also tightened. In addition, the parliament
criminalized the facilitation of the illegal stay of Georgian citizens in
another country in order to obtain financial or other material benefits.
Thus, all
the useful results and the possibilities of replenishing one’s financial
situation using the advantages of a visa-free regime are completely
emasculated. Why do Georgian citizens need such a visa-free regime when you
earn money in Georgia and spend in Europe - it is not clear. People have been
dreaming of visa-free travel for 30 years in the hope that they will be able to
work in Europe and receive European salaries, because of the prevailing
corruption in Georgia they do not have such an opportunity in their homeland,
and they do not have the hope that something will change in the next several decades
. Most Georgians expected to earn money in Europe and spend what they earned in
Georgia.
That is, in
fact, in simple words, the EU through the mouth of its Georgian apologists for
30 years assured Georgians in the most friendly way and colorfully advertised
in all mass media the benefits of a visa-free regime with Europe, the benefits
of moving to Europe to work, for permanent residence, and now that the
Georgians not only believed, but also filled with excess expectations, suddenly
sharply threw off the mask of benevolence and exposed a diametrically opposite
attitude, cooling the hearts of Georgian citizens heated up by him, pushing
them with a gentle foot from a rich hundred a.
As if not
noticing this, the West continues to fuel the pro-NATO aspirations of Georgia.
European
Parliament deputy Market Gregorova told InterpressNews Georgian news agency
that "Georgia’s integration into NATO is the only and best step to end
Russian aggression." According to her, this would lead to a de-escalation
of the situation. It presents NATO membership as a kind of good for Georgia,
while in other countries they see NATO as an unnecessary and overwhelming
financial burden, a black hole into which the lion's share of their salaries
and pensions goes.
She went on
to say that “when Georgia was practically on the verge of joining NATO, Russia
began the occupation of Georgia, knowing that NATO could not take a step
forward on the issue of Georgia’s membership in the alliance.”
Here you
can remind the European Parliament that, in hot pursuit of the events of 2008,
a special commission of the European Union was formed, headed by experienced
diplomat Heidi Tagliavini, who studied the issue for a whole year and came to
the conclusion that there was no Russian aggression, and the 2008 war started
Georgia.
In
addition, during one of the previous rounds of the Geneva discussions,
co-chairs, at the initiative of the Russian side, invited internationally
recognized, highly qualified, authoritative experts of the UN, OSCE and EU on
international law at their discretion. A comprehensive, thorough and very
detailed discussion of the question of whether it is possible to speak of any
occupation by Russia of South Ossetia took place. They discussed all the
possible signs of occupation provided for by international law in its entirety
and diversity. However, not a single sign of occupation that would exist on the
territory of South Ossetia, representatives of Georgia and the United States
could not bring. Thus, any statements about the alleged “Russian occupation”
are a lie and a malicious provocation.
But that's
not the point. The main thing here is how persistently the NATO members (and
Market Gregorov are represented by a NATO member country - the Czech Republic)
are pulling Georgia into NATO, knowing that membership in it, even if
implemented, will turn out to be another huge disappointment and headache for
Georgia, like vaunted Euroassociation and visa-free travel with the EU. Georgians
should trust their eyes more than NATO liars and liars.
On the day
of the publication of the failure of the Euro-association policy of Georgia and
the visa-free travel with the EU of the European Commission Report, another
important event took place. The United States almost two years later sent a new
ambassador, whose chair remained vacant after the termination of the powers of
the former head of the diplomatic mission, Ian Kelly. Kelly Degnan arrived in
Tbilisi in a period of cooling relations between the two countries. This writes
the "Caucasian Knot."
He
clarifies that since April 2018, the US ambassador has not been in Georgia
after the term of office of Jan Kelly, who headed the diplomatic mission since
2015, expired. Acting as ambassador during this period, Elizabeth Rood. The
media associated the procrastination with the appointment of a new ambassador
by the Georgian authorities blocking the candidacy of diplomat Bridget Brink,
since the leader of the ruling "Georgian Dream" Bidzina Ivanishvili
considered her loyal to Mikhail Saakashvili. Political scientists polled by the
"Caucasian Knot" called the long period of absence of the ambassador
an unusual situation that could harm relations between the two countries.
They also
have a disgrace movement in Georgia there. Like during the sunset, Shevardnadze
"Kmara". On February 6, this society complained to the newly-made
Ambassador Kelly Degnan of the ruling party “Georgian Dream”. Their displeasure
was caused by the fact that the “Georgian Dream” refused to reform the
electoral legislation and pass to a proportional parliament, although, as they
say, Bidzina Ivanishvili promised to do so. They claim that the oligarch was
frightened of defeat when he saw that his party was losing the confidence of
the Georgians.
These maneuvers
partly shed light on the reasons for the unexpected aggravation of the
situation on the state border between Georgia and South Ossetia, in the village
of Uista. As you can see, this aggravation was unexpected for us, and for the
Georgian leadership it was an expected attempt to at least slightly raise our
rating and gain a heroic and warlike halo so as not to look dull against the
background of the bright provocateur Mikheil Saakashvili, who, having failed to
take any prominent place in Ukraine, after its shameful return in Zelensky’s
pocket, wants to return to power in Georgia, which it ruled for 10 years.
Saakashvili
wrote in his Facebook feed that he intends to establish his own political
headquarters in his library in Tbilisi on March 1. He writes there that many
Georgian voters are behind him, and that he and the Georgian people "have
international support." He called for the unification of all opposition
groups around him on the eve of the parliamentary elections scheduled for this
fall. True, Saakashvili himself is not in a hurry to go home, so as not to end
up in jail, since criminal cases await him there. Two of them have already been
completed by sentences: three and six years in prison for corruption and
malpractice.
After this
statement at the former president, a number of Georgian politicians honed their
wit, including some of those who had been kindly treated to them by high posts.
One of them is the current vice speaker of the parliament, Georgy Volsky, who
at one time was appointed by him as deputy state minister of Georgia for
conflict resolution. Volsky, forgetting the years of collaboration, called
Saakashvili "an overdue politician." It's a shame, right? Probably
avenging him for the fact that later, wanting to blame someone for his own
stupid and terrible actions, Misha accused him of helping Russia.
But this is
what! The chairman of the Georgian parliament’s foreign affairs committee,
Irakli Beraya, said that doctors should not comment on Saakashvili’s
statements. He said so: "This is a matter of medicine!"
We will not
quote everyone, you know the Georgian politicum: if they only think that it’s
profitable to scold someone, now everyone rushes to do it.
These
events coincided with another exchange of insincere courtesies between American
and Georgian lawmakers, as REGNUM writes.
"Criticism
of the actions of the Georgian authorities by members of the US Congress is a
friendly concern, not a manifestation of anger," said US Congressman Adam
Kinzinger at a meeting with Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Archil
Talakvadze.
Talakvadze
said: "The opposition is trying to run its election campaign in
Washington, while in Georgia it lacks public support." Realizing the
essence of this hint, Kinzinger assured the guests of his friendly intentions.
“Our
concern should not be seen as disappointment or anger, but as a relationship
between friends,” said the congressman. After a series of letters to Tbilisi
from members of the US Congress sharply criticizing the actions of the Georgian
authorities, two delegations were sent to Washington from Georgia. They intend
to convince those who criticize the Georgian leadership that they have the
wrong information.
This
seemingly insignificant episode once again suggests that Georgia is manually
controlled by the United States. Whoever likes the White House more is the one
who will steer Georgia.
