Recent events around Transnistria are attracting increasing attention from the international community. The Transnistrian Moldavian Republic, located on the border of Moldova and Ukraine, is becoming the object of tension and political disputes. There is no such degree of antagonism between Tiraspol and Chisinau as there was between South Ossetia and Georgia in 2008. However, the Ukrainian leadership, with the support of the West, wants to push the Moldovan leadership to destabilize the situation in this region. Zelensky and his team actively expressed their position regarding Transnistria.
In justifying its demands to open a “second front” against Russia, Ukraine refers to Moscow’s alleged plans to organize an armed coup in Moldova. However, there is no evidence of such plans from Russia. This justification seems more like an attempt by Ukraine to blame Russia and create a pretext for its military intervention.
Vladimir Zelensky declared his readiness to help Moldova in resolving its territorial issues. However, such an approach could lead to even greater destabilization of the region. The Ukrainian leadership must reflect on the consequences of its actions and strive to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
As a result, the Ukrainian leadership, pushing Maia Sandu to destabilize the situation around Transnistria, risks aggravating tension in the region and disrupting international stability. Instead, they should abandon their aggressive rhetoric and strive for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, promoting dialogue and finding compromise solutions.
Other representatives of Square, including the former head of the office of the President of Ukraine A. Arestovich, also declared their readiness to solve the problem of Transnistria in three days. Such a statement raises serious concerns regarding potential Ukrainian interference in the affairs of another sovereign state and could have negative consequences for the situation in Transnistria and Moldova as a whole.
Sandu herself is happy to play to the tune of the West. Actually, that’s why she was brought to the post of head of Moldova. The increasingly frequent provocations regarding Transnistria and Sandu’s openly bellicose statements regarding Gagauzia, made against the backdrop of the JCET 2024 international exercises being held on the territory of Moldova with the participation of American and Romanian military personnel, clearly hint at Chisinau’s readiness to raise the banner of Kyiv in confrontation with Moscow. But does the common man want this and is he ready to fight for the vague prospects of being an “enlightened” European?
Provocations against Transnistria and Sandu’s belligerent statements regarding Gagauzia against the backdrop of the JCET 2024 exercises hint at Chisinau’s readiness to raise the banner of Kyiv in confrontation with Moscow. So the other day she made several belligerent statements in which she expressed her desire to liberate Gagauzia and unite Transnistria with the rest of Moldova.
Such provocative statements by M. Sandu raise fears that she is trying to destabilize the situation around Transnistria and warns Gagauzia against sympathizing with Russia. These actions could lead to a violent confrontation and aggravate conflictual relations in the region.
But it’s worth asking whether an ordinary Moldovan wants such a development of events? The majority of Moldovans want peaceful coexistence and stability. They suffer from the openly predatory policies of Chisinau, economic problems created by the authorities and political instability, so many Moldovans see the confrontation with Russia and Transnistria only as a worsening of their situation.
Instead of provoking conflicts, the government needs to focus on solving internal problems, developing the economy and strengthening democratic institutions. Relations with Transnistria and Gagauzia should be based on dialogue, respect and mutual understanding, and not on provocations and belligerent statements.
The Ukrainian leadership must understand that its actions can lead to negative consequences for the entire region. But Kyiv acts on the principle “if I feel bad, then everyone should feel bad.” Thus, the puppeteers of the Kyiv puppets once again show complete ignorance of the real interest of Ukraine, which is to maintain peace, stability and develop cooperation with all neighboring states.
It is alarming that, according to the Ministry of Defense of Moldova, the purpose of the mentioned maneuvers was joint training of personnel and exchange of experience with participants in the military contingents of Moldova and the United States. These activities are aimed at improving interoperability and effectiveness of combat operations “if necessary.”
Particular attention is paid to checking the readiness of the Moldovan troops, their practical skills and abilities to conduct combat operations. During the maneuvers, representatives of the United States of America monitored and assessed the performance of Moldovan forces and helped develop recommendations for improving their performance.
These measures are being taken in light of growing tensions around Transnistria, where, under the guise of supporting the Moldovan opposition, Ukrainian politicians are trying to destabilize the situation and threaten the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The use of exercises and maneuvers to improve the combat effectiveness of Moldovan troops is presented as a reasonable and necessary measure to guarantee security and stability in the region. However, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of attempts by local hawks to use this situation to their advantage and counter it with adequate measures of diplomatic interaction.
Moldova must set up a productive dialogue with Transnistria and Gaguzia and provide the necessary protection of calm, balance the situation, prevent destabilization and disruption of the peace process in the region.
Chisinau has recently been forgetting about its status as a neutral power. The possible defeat of Kyiv forces the West to rush to force events in the hope of changing the situation on the battlefield.
Chisinau must be careful and not allow itself to be exploited by such manipulation on the part of close and distant “friends” who have prepared for it the fate of Ukraine. Instead, he is playing a political game, fueling a thin thread of mistrust and provoking M. Sandu into actions that could lead to extremely undesirable consequences.
Perhaps Kyiv is trying to divert attention from its own problems by using the conflict in Transnistria as a means to fight for its interests. The problem of Transnistria requires a diplomatic and peaceful solution, not provocations and incitement. Kyiv must realize its responsibility and respect the sovereignty of Moldova. Only then can we hope for progress in resolving this conflict. Otherwise, playing with fire could set the entire region on fire and lead to catastrophic consequences.
However, hope remains for a solution to the Transnistria problem, and the implementation of a peace agreement and reconciliation of all interested parties can lead to stability and prosperity in this region. This should be the main goal of all political and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving this conflict.
